Brazil: 1729-R Joao V (1706-1750), gold 12800 Reis ('Johanna' = Dobra), 1st type with oval shield, Fleur-de-Lis over diagonal edge, Rio de Janeiro mint. 28.68g. KM-140. Graded NGC AU58, with some lustre & unusually well struck. Impressive short lived large size issue. All examples from Rio de Janeiro being much scarcer than from Minas Gerais, especially in such high grade. (P)SOLD at A$9000

Brazil: 1731-M Joao V (1706-1750), gold 12800 Reis ('Johanna' = Dobra), italic arms shield, original diagonal reeded edge, Minas Gerais mint. (such examples of the original diagonal reeded edge are rare as the law of 1732 made it compulsory under threat confiscation & years of jail time, to return all coins to the mint for rechecking & application of the new Fleur-de-Lis edge). 28.34g. KM-139. Nice gEF, obv struck from rusted dies with dull fields as usual, rev sharply struck. Impressive short lived large size issue. (P)SOLD at A$6000

KM-148. Nice gEF, slightly weak obv strike but hardly any wear. Impressive short lived large size issue. All examples from Rio de Janeiro being much scarcer than from Minas Gerais, and as they have distinctly different shield design so the difference is not merely the mint mark. (P)SOLD at A$8500
