Best Shot of Victorian Military Forces Medal officially impressed 'Pte H Smith 'C' Coy. 1st Bn VIC Rangers' WWI trio officially impressed '934 Sjt H Smith 8/BN AIF'. Harold Smith enlisted 25-8-1914, GSW to left foot 25-4-1915, discharged 14-12-1915. With silver Wound badge, Returned from Active Service badge, 15ct gold Return fob engraved 'Presented to Sgt H Smith by the residents of Lower Norton on his return from Active Service' (12.27g) & cased 1967 ANZAC medallion gVF-EF. The 15ct gold fob has over $900 in gold value alone. Smith's extensive 65 pg NAA file is open on the internet. His date of wound on the 'Casulaty Form - Active Service' is April 25, also April 26 & 27 on other forms. The VIC Local Forces Best Shot is extremely rare with probably only 10 or so medals issued & only 3 other medals known. Two dated 1893-4 & 1984 & named to recipients. The third medal is un-named & un-dated & is probably an unissued Specimen. The un-dated medal & un-named medal sold for $5200 + comm in Noble Numismatics 1997 Auction 55, lot 79, while the 1894 dated medal to Edwin Jewell was offered in Auction 135 with an estimate of $10,000 but was unsold.
