Good quality wool with polished cotton lining, complete with original buttons', thin leather chin strap, bugle horn badge & insignia for 1st Div. 1 Army Corps, Army of the Potomac. Evidence on crown of removal of letters '5' & '6' - this would equate to the 56th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Battle Honours for the 56th Pa include Antietam & Gettysburg. Overall GC. Early War civilian contract pieces hard to find. Minor shrinkage to leather work & cotton lining separating age stains to wool cloth, but free of moth & retains great character.
