20765 Click to enlarge photo | Japan. ca 1850 Kabuto (helmet), late Edo period, for foot soldiers. Padded & quilted coarse blue cotton cloth. The crown overlaid with lacquered iron plates joined by chain mail & chain mail 'squares' to neck flap. crown consists of 30 separate plates shaped & tapered to conform to head shape. Blue cloth lower face shield (probably to pad a face mask) with press-stud fastening (no doubt a later addition). Blue silk cord loops to interior to assist with fastening (securing gap b/w plates at rear top, possibly intended for placement of hair queue. Extension to neck curtain at rear in quilted, padded blue cloth of same type as face shield, no doubt both added at a later (ca 1900) time. Generally VGC.
