Boxer Rebellion is a scarcer field of Ukiyo-e woodblock print, relatively fewer paints made for the market. Dramatic image of armies of the multi-national Eight Nation Alliance attacking the Chinese at Tianjin during the Boxer Rebellion in China. The troops came to the defence of the foreigners living in Tianjin (Tientsin) who were under attack by the Boxers, an act which triggered the Chinese government to send Imperial Army troops to attack the foreigners. Here Alliance soldiers rush forward across the shore to confront the Chinese, one man falling back onto the ground. A Chinese man at left watches with shock as a small boat unloads men near the water's edge & warship fire shots at the walled fortress at left. An unusual & rare image from this historic conflict, detailed with burnishing in the black uniform & fine bukashi shading (approx 36x72cm). Cpl minor edge flts & sl margin soiling o/w GC & scarce. Examples of the woodblock housed in the British Museum collection & the Saint Louis Art Museum collection (details provided). | AVAILABLE at A$500 |
