Japan 1894-95. Sino-Japanese War. Ukiyo-e original multi-coloured woodblock print triptych, 'Admiral Court Kabayama Sukenori the Chief of Naval Staff Attacking the Enemy Ship (Chinese ironclad Dingyuan) from On Board Seiko Maru', 17 Sep 1894, by Ginko Adachi (a.c. 1874-97). A dramatic design filled with energy. Wonderfully detailed fine shading & touches of burnishing. Bold depiction of the Japanese warship Seikyo Maru attacking the enemy (Chinese main fleet ironclad Dingyuan, detailed info from Wikipedia included) during the war. Commander Kabayama leads the attack from atop the deck, waving his sword high as sailors kneeling beside him fire shots. The Chinese main ship Dingyuan capsizes, sinking into the turbulent sea as sailors are thrown about. Orang flames & smoke pour from another vessel that has been hit at centre, the masts tilting as ship lists. At left men on a lower deck fire cannons at the Chinese while shot explodes overhead. This can be seen as the sister painting of the previous item 'Great Victory of our Troops in the Yellow Sea' (Approx 36.5x72cm). Examples of the woodblock are held in the collections of the Art Institute Chicago & the Museum of Fine Art, Boston. Odd minor edge flt, overall VF. Scarce.AVAILABLE at A$400
