20403 Click for more photos | Japan 1894-95 Sino-Japanese Ukiyo-e original multicolour woodblock print triptych, ' Great Victory of Our Troops in the Yellow Sea (Yalus River)', 17 Sep 1894, by Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915). This is the signature painting of this significant martime battle & serves as the cover photo of Wikepedia profile (attached in this lot). On the left Admiral Court Kabayama Sukenori, the Chief of Naval Staff (later became the 1st Governor-General (his information from Wikepedia also included in this lot), positioned on Saikyo Maru, a merchant turned warship, organising the attack on the Chinese Fleet. In the centre the Japanese soldiers are firing the cannon. From the far end the Japanese & Chinese Fleets are fiercely engaged. The sky shows the firing like fireworks. Notably the painting shows the Chinese warship Jingyuan sunk while Dingyuan caught fire. The wole painting depicts 7 warships from both sides, they are Saikyo Maru, Akisushima, Itsukushima & Fuso from Japanese side, Dingyan, Zhiyuan & Zhiyuan from the Chinese side (approx 37x76cm). Wide borders a little aged, prints bright & clean. A similar woodblock was part of a lot sold by Christie's for US$2160 (A$3300, est US$1000-$1500). Sales record included. | AVAILABLE at A$400 |
