1855 QV Chalon 1d red DIE PROOF with "VAN DIEMENS LAND" inscription at top only as thin outlined letters (obscured by the lacework design but definitely identifiable when magnified), this being state of die before it was reworked to solid colourless letters, sl later print by DLR on thin card, huge margins. Actually a 2nd 1d master die, from which separate dies were rolled to make the final 1d, 2d & 4d dies. Superb fresh UN as made. Very rare & attractive specialist item. Vendor bought it at another Sydney auction in 2005 for $1800+. (P)
